Human Footprint Inventory and Oil Sands Monitoring
Since 2014, we have been collaborating with the Government of Alberta as part of the Alberta Human Footprint Monitoring Program (AHFMP) to improve the accuracy of human footprint mapping in the province. Together, we produce a comprehensive Human Footprint Inventory (HFI) for the entirety of Alberta that dates back to 2000 and is now updated annually to reflect changing human footprint conditions across the province. Our HFI efforts include generating enhanced attribution for human footprint features in the Oil Sands Region (OSR) of Alberta.
2025–26 Deliverables
Our 2025-26 work is focused on updating the province-wide HFI to 2023 conditions and incorporating new reference data. We will create enhanced attribution for 2023 human footprint features within the OSR and update landscape-scale datasets of historical footprint for the OSR for the 1950s and 1980s. The HFI team will also work on mapping night-time light conditions for the entire OSR.
